Time Traveler
Visitors will enter the Time Travel Departure Terminal in the museum's main exhibit hall and move on into the interior of a sleek, futuristic, time traveling ship. The Captain of the Time Machine will meet them at the entrance and will take them on an educational journey like no other. Once on board the children will see themselves flashing through time on the ship's front "viewscreen." The ship's computer will bring up a "training film" that will orient the time travelers to the time and the place that they are traveling to. Once the ship lands our travelers will exit and find themselves in the past - not as observers but as participants.
By late spring three of our six Time Travel Destinations will be available:
  • 1851- A Tennessee station on the Underground Railroad where time travelers, now escapees, may suddenly find that they need to locate the old hiding places - and quickly.
  • 1963 - The basement of a church in Birmingham where children are gathering for a day of civil rights demonstrations, confrontations and maybe a trip to the Birmingham jail.
  • 1945 - Its D-Day and our time travelers will be walking into a New Jersey soda fountain where they will be joining some young people who about to hear a news flash on the radio.
  • 1969 - The same soda fountain but this time its nearly a quarter of a century later. There's dancing and singing at a birthday party that is about to turn to the tv where a news reporter is getting ready to cut away to a landing - on the moon.
  • 1910 - What's it like to spend 10 or 12 hours a day working in a cold, dark, coal mine. Our time travelers will hear about life in the mines when their journey takes them deep into a tight little Pennsylvania tunnel and they meet two of the teenagers who are forced to spend their days as workers in a time before child labor was made illegal.
  • 1919 - Join a team of explorers traveling to the North Pole.
